On Fire for All Things Christ

The Christ

In class a few weeks ago, someone raised the question, Why is Jesus called Christ? Our professor replied, Christ is a title, the Greek word for Messiah. That’s why sometimes we hear, Jesus the Christ, or Jesus the Messiah. Messiah means anointed.

In other words, Christ is not His last name. He is not Mr. Christ.

I found this wonderful source about the meaning of Christ with reference to scripture, so I wanted to share it with you. Be blessed my beloved in learning and growing in the knowledge and Word of God!

  1. The logical question from that is: Annointed to what. And when you learn that answer from the Spirit, life has just begun.

    • Yes, Amen! Jesus was anointed, the chosen one to free us from sin.

The Bible says that Jesus Christ was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit to spread the Good News and free those who have been held captive by sin (Luke 4:18-19; Acts 10:38) After Christ left the earth, He left us the gift of the Holy Spirit (John 14:16). Now all Christians are anointed, chosen for a specific purpose in furthering God’s Kingdom (1 John 2:20). “Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee” (2 Corinthians 1:21-22).

  2. Being both God and man, it seems that when the bible references ‘Christ’, it’s referring to His divinity, and ‘Jesus’ to His humanity. Seeing Him in this way helped my experience of Him especially with verses such as the “Spirit of Jesus” in Acts 16:7, and the “Spirit of Christ” in Rom 8:9. So we can experience aspects of His humanity and divinity because we have the Spirit in us.
